Royal Stoke University Hospital recently celebrated completion of a PS6 million expansion at Royal Stoke University Hospital by modular building contractor MTX, in just 24 weeks from ordering date. Although challenging in terms of logistics, because the new modular building was situated between existing buildings and an already active maternity unit. Delivery required careful co-ordination as it involved craneing modules over occupied spaces during assembly.

The maternity unit is an extremely busy unit that cares for over 12,000 babies per year. Staffed by specialist midwives and nurses, this department boasts the highest rate of births in West Midlands and strives to give each baby the highest-quality care – prenatal care, labour & birth assistance as well as postnatal support – available.

Charity funding has provided comforting relief for families of newborn babies staying in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This makes it easier for parents to remain close to their infant and strengthen the bond before being discharged home.

Parking

Royal Stoke University Hospital (UHNM) will soon construct a multi-storey car park to alleviate staff parking woes on former North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary and Central Outpatients Department sites, located one mile away. Due to this problem, staff struggle with arriving on time for work, forcing many into residential areas where parking disruption causes major inconvenience for nearby residents.

UHNM Trust plans for a multi-storey car park at Grindley Hill Court are being approved by the Council’s Planning Committee, who voted unanimously in favour of their plans. Existing hospital staff accommodation on site will be demolished to make way for it and members of the Committee voted in favour.

UHNM’s staff parking facilities are already severely oversubscribed, with car parks situated over one mile from its main hospital building causing issues for those working nearby. While some hospitals rely on temporary car parks – this usually means staff have to walk or wait for transport in order to make it to work on time – UHNM’s director of estates noted that moving staff parking closer to hospital site would reduce these problems while increasing staff punctuality.
